The idea of a tourist tax to enter Venice was born in 2018, approved in 2019 and was to be applied from the summer of 2020. Due to the pandemic, it was postponed to an indefinite date and has been postponed ever since. It was finally approved in November 2023. From 25 April 2024 , St. Mark's Day in Venice and a public holiday throughout Italy, a pilot test of the new entry tax to Venice was launched for those who did not stay overnight in the city. The test in 2024 has already ended and the tax will be applied again for 54 days from April to July 2025 .

The fee, called contributo di accesso , or access contribution in Italian, was €5 in 2024 and will be €10 in 2025 – €5 for advance purchase. Is it here to stay? It is not yet known, but it seems so. What is clear is that Venice is the first city in the world to charge tourists just to set foot on its soil.
The goal? To keep overtourism at bay , the over-tourism that so affects the Venetian capital, to protect the fragility of its unique urban system and to make it more habitable for locals and less oppressive for wordpress web design agency tourists. Has it succeeded? We don't think so. At the moment, there is no limit on the number of tourists and we don't think anyone will stop travelling to Venice for 5 or 10 €. We have already seen how mass tourism reacts: the number of visitors has far exceeded expectations. What this system does allow is to know the number of tourists present in the city at any given time.
